keys for oregon state
be sound in the kicking game. the beavers have no shot in this game if they lose the field position battle. of all the teams i've seen so far this year they've had the worst combined effort kicking field goals and punting. the beavers are a combined 3-6 in field goals and are averaging just less than 30 net yards per punt. that's good for 114th in the country.
couldn't have been a better performance for osu here. outside of johnson's big kick return with 2 minutes left the beavers didn't let usc start a drive closer than their own 38 yard line and although the punts were ugly and slow developing hekker nailed two inside the 6 yard line in the 4th quarter up only a touchdown. the beavers were atrocious in the field goal game with the blocked field goal and missed extra points.
get some kind of running game going. lyle moevao has been forced to throw no less than 34 passes in the first three games and he's prone to throwing interceptions. the beavers have a lot of talent on offense but it doesn't matter if they are stuck in 2nd/3rd and long all day because the trojans will get sacks to alter field position, turnover moevao, and win the time of posession battle with lots of 3-and-outs for the beavers.
who could have seen this coming? the rodgers boys were easily the players of the game. of course jacquizz was fantastic, but the majority of his yards came on plays where james came in motion and secured the boundary against eversen griffen and other ends/backers. what's funny is i don't think i've ever seen them run that play before and usc runs the same type of play pretty consistently. awesome gameplan by riley and langsdorf. it couldn't have gone better and moevao barely had to thrown the ball because the beavers were so, so good on first downs. amazing. ONE three-and-out for the beavers and it was to open the second half. i was worried a little bit after the first three drives in the second half when the beavs only used rodgers in motion once or twice and refused to throw much at all.
osu also has to put up some sort of a fight against the run game of usc. stanford and penn state ran for 200+ yards and you can bet the trojans reach that mark tonight. osu's only hope defensively is to force some turnovers, because the line and backers are inexperienced and usc will push them around a bit. banker is a good defensive coach, so i think the beavers will be a little bit improved in that aspect this week but it may not show up on the state sheet, facing such an excellent scheme.
way too much screwing around with mcknight. he didn't do anything in this game while stafon johnson and cj gable were fantastic, getting 66 yards on 10 carries. mcknight had 11 yards on 7 carries. sark should take a hit from the media imo, but you can't give the beaver defense enough credit. they reacted as well as you can against usc's perimeter running and screen plays.
so what do the beavers have going for them? they have some really underrated skill players and if they can get in manageable down and distance situations they'll be able to move the ball a bit.
story of the game. they just didn't have to throw the ball and you saw how good the rodgers brothers and stroughter were.
play of the game: what should have been a pick at the end of the half and ended up a touchdown.
player(s) of the game: rodgers bros. just a dominating performance.
good job, beavs!
